Photographer Sir Don McCullin
At the ‘Old Bell House’ in Beit Chabab, the Phillipe Jabre Collection will be exhibiting a group of photographs taken by Sir Don McCullin in Lebanon on several visits between 1971 and 1982. McCullin is one of the world’s most accomplished and respected living photojournalists. His career encompasses assignments across the world for newspapers and magazines, particularly in areas of conflict such as Berlin, Cyprus, Vietnam, Biafra, Northern Ireland, Lebanon and the Congo. But his interests lie beyond war and more recently he has developed a body of landscapes in Somerset, the area of England where he lives. He has also embarked on a series of images depicting Roman ruins in the Middle East and North Africa titled ‘Southern Frontiers’.
McCullin’s work is characterised by a humane interest in the suffering and experiences of war. In the best traditions of photojournalism, McCullin documents the most challenging aspects of human strife. While the photographs capture specific events, they also achieve a universal and enduring significance. In 2017, Don McCullin was knighted by the Queen for services to Photography.

From the studio to cultural institutions, what shapes an artist’s career ? Is the support of experts and cultural institutions necessary to promote undiscovered artists on the contemporary art scene ?
How do theoretical approaches and visions inform the understanding of artists’ production ?
How can artists’ freedom and singularity be protected despite external pressures to fit a certain mold ?
How can the imposition of certain western criteria on artistic production be avoided, and how can different approaches be better integrated in non-western scenes ?
